André Alexis to prepare for award ceremony

It was just over a month ago that Fifteen Dogs  became the winner of the Canada Reads debate. What you may not realise is that, a month before even that, the novel won one of the richest literary accolades in the world, the Windham Campbell Prize. At the end of February calls were made to eight unsuspecting writers, who were nominated in secret, to inform them that they would be recieving $165,000 for winning. A life changing call if ever there was one.

Currently the winners are preparing for the various award ceremonies that will take place September 13-15. Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis is about fifteen dogs that are given human level awareness and follows them as they navigate life with a new perception and new feelings. The book is currently available in-store.

Remembering Robert M. PirsigSee more

It is with great sadness that we deliver news of the passing of Robert M. Pirsig, author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Lila: An Inquiry into Mortals. Mr. Pirsig passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind a lasting impact on the literary world and having inspired the millions of people that have read his books.

Robert M. Pirsig’s life was full of adventure. He attended the University of Minnesota for a degree in philosophy, the Barnes Hindu University for a study in Hindu philosophy, and was also enrolled in a Ph.D program at the University of Chicago. He was incredibly brave, having taught himself how to navigate and crossing the Atlantic twice in Aretê, his small sailboat.

Following the huge success of his first book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, he helped found the Minnesota Zen Meditation Centre and published a second novel called Lila: An Inquiry into Mortals. It was a work of fiction that retained the philosophical themes he had spent his lifetime learning about. It was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1992.

Robert M. Pirsigs books are available in store and by special order.
