When you own and operate an amazing store like Bolen Books I am rewarded everyday by having amazing experiences with customers. Small interactions, smiles from happy browsers and spenders along with piles of books beside people making the right choice, let me know that we are creating the kind of store Victoria needs. Today something exceptional happened. We won an award presented to us by Success by 6. The award honours us for having the most family friendly retail store in Victoria!. Some of the comments that were read aloud to the breakfast crowd at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, were so heart warming and reaffirming that it made me realize Bolen Books is more than just a family friendly store where you can buy books, it’s something to do with your family. I could not be more proud.

We here at Bolen Books would like to wish you a jolly Star Wars day this May the 4th! To help you celebrate we’re giving away a copy of Vader’s Little Princess! Stop into the store and enter to win with any purchase of anything. Anything at all! Contest is open until May the 5th.
If you haven’t seen Darth Vader and Son or Vader’s Little Princess before, you definitely have to come in and check them out. They’re hilarious! And also rather charming. Perhaps a great father’s day gift for the dad who can empathize with Lord Vader’s parenting skills.
We originally wanted to give away a live Bantha, but you can imagine the many reasons that idea didn’t work out.
May the 4th be with you!
Sure, we have plenty of great board games at Bolen’s, but that’s old news. What’s cooler is that we have several deluxe versions of our favourite games! Why get the vanilla version when you can have the bigger, better, faster, more version?!
The very best bang for your buck in the board game section is the Carcassonne Big Box. If you plan on picking up Carcassonne at any point in your life, this is the way to do it. The base game, plus 9 expansions, all together for less than half of their combined total price! As a gift, the Carcassonne Big Box pretty much trumps a vacation in an actual French village.
Love playing Munchkin? Come in and get Munchkin Deluxe! And of course we have all the weird expansions, etc. Because if you know Munchkin, you know there is never enough Munchkin. Which is peculiar for a game with such a diminutive title.
To bring this back home for you book lovers, we have the Book Lovers Edition of Jenga. Add a whole other layer to Jenga with conversation provoking blocks.
Board games have certainly improved by leaps and bounds over the years. And we have hundreds of great games to choose from. We even secretly have Crokinole boards, but let’s just keep that on the down low.
The Dark, a joint effort by the shadowy sensation Lemony Snicket and the darkly delightful Jon Klassen offers a brand new take on an old fear. Laszlo is afraid of the dark that lives in his cellar and creeps out through his house at night, enveloping all the safe familiar things and shrouding every room in blackness. Then comes the night when the dark arrives at Laszlo’s bed…what happens next? You’ll just have to screw up your courage and read on. Possibly the finest book on overcoming fear written in the last decade, this book should be read and shared by all who’ve ever wondered—and worried—about things that go bump in the night.
