On the Collecting of Printed Comics

Allow me to get basic terminology out of the way first: a single ISSUE of a comic is typically 22 pages long, and held together by staples. These issues are collected and reprinted as TRADE PAPERBACKS, or HARDCOVERS, resembling the prose novels they rub shoulders with here at Bolen Books. The term GRAPHIC NOVEL usually refers to a book that wasn’t first printed in issues. Comic books tend to be more expensive, pound for pound, than unillustrated novels. So I think it’s important to know when prices are coming down, and I’m not just talking about how a softocver is less money than a hardcover. Here’s an example: PREACHER by Garth Ennis, ran for a total of 75 issues. These issues were collected into 9 trade paperbacks. Then a hardcover edition reshuffled those 75 issues into six volumes. (total for all six hardcovers: $286.95) Currently, these six hardcovers are being reprinted into six softcovers. Eleanor Catton’s The Luminaries to become a TV mini series!

Eleanor Catton, author of the Man Booker Prize and Governor General’s Literary Awards winning The Luminaries, has signed on to have her book made into a TV mini series, to be filmed in New Zealand. Check out the story from the New Zealand Herald HERE.
